Course Outline
Topics in this course include:
- current Ontario legislation, regulations and policies concerning ethical issues
- innovative and alternative practices to meet student needs
- the legal issues and challenges associated with special education
- provincial, national and international reports and current trends in theory and research
- categories and definitions of the range of exceptionalities as defined by the Ministry of Education: Behaviour, Communication, Intellectual, Physical and Multiple
- teaching colleagues how to apply Ministry of Education and board policies in the development and implementation of programs and services
- facilitating mentorship and coaching networks
- reviewing issues and preparing files as required to access funding
- demonstrating and promoting practices, strategies and assessments in special education
- developing and supporting special education teams at the school and board level
- working collaboratively with agencies
- promoting the use of information technology in research and inquiry processes
- enhancing independent learning and living
- assistive technology: tools for learning
Prerequisites
- Hold a “Certificate of Qualification” showing successful completion of Special Education, Part 2.
- Two years teaching experience as verified on the Confirmation of Teaching Experience form, signed by a supervisory officer*, confirming two years of teaching experience completed after teacher’s certification. The Superintendent must also recognize on this Confirmation of Teaching Experience form that in one of these years, the candidate has demonstrated that significant program and instruction modifications in Special Education were explicitly planned, implemented and reviewed in the teacher’s class. This form must be submitted to our office by the semester deadline date for course approval.
