Course Description:
Topics include:

  • exploring a variety of conceptual frameworks related to Assistive Technology delivery model(s)
  • knowing and understanding policies and procedures that are relevant to learners
  • understanding the physical, sensory, cognitive, emotional, social and cultural contexts affecting learners using Assistive Technology
  • understanding the importance of matching Assistive Technology tools to tasks, function and needs of the learner’s profile
  • integrating Assistive Technology into to students’ everyday experiences
  • understanding the stages of implementation of Assistive Technology in support of the learner
  • having awareness of new and emerging trends in policies, practices and innovations (for example, E-Text, E-learning, digital literacy)
  • integrating Assistive Technology into a variety of instructional strategies
  • adapting, accommodating and modifying and instruction to meet the needs of all learners
  • using a variety of Assistive Technology tools to support literacy and numeracy
  • understanding the use of adaptive devices and tools to aid the learner
  • manipulation and control of the learning environment (physical, social, cognitive).
  •  using a range of assessment and evaluation strategies that support the dignity, emotional wellness and cognitive development of all students
  •  understanding the importance of communicating with, involving and supporting parents/guardians

Requirements:

  • Hold a “Certificate of Qualification” showing basic qualifications in two divisions, i.e. Primary, Junior, Intermediate, or Senior. Candidates who hold an Interim COQ may have different/additional criteria for registration as required by the Ontario College of Teachers, and as specified on their Interim COQ.
  • An acceptable university degree
