As educators in Ontario, one of our highest priorities is creating and sustaining safe, equitable and inclusive learning environments that respect and celebrate the diversity of our students. Creating a classroom and school environment that truly honours the identity of students who identify as LGBTQ, where they feel safe and can thrive, is a purposeful endeavour, and one which has positive results for all students. Critical to this course is the modelling of a positive learning environment that reflects care, professional knowledge, ethical practice, leadership and ongoing professional learning in both elementary and secondary settings.
Candidates will critically explore a wide range of pedagogies, resources and supports as they develop the theoretical understanding necessary to apply, implement and assess programs and/or practices related to Teaching LGBTQ Students. Strategies explored will foster a sense of partnership and collaboration with families, school/board personnel and communities. Ongoing critical examination of personal biases and privilege will constitute a significant element of this course as candidates engage in various learning experiences and reflect on new learning.
Note: This course is open to all educators from Kindergarten through to grade 12 and is fully accredited by the Ontario College of Teachers.
