The underlying purpose of Guidance and Career Education Part 3 elective is to build on what candidates have learned in Guidance and Career Education Parts 1 and 2 and to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the role of the guidance counsellor within the school setting. Particular emphasis is placed on the leadership role of the guidance counsellor with regards to the guidance and career education program in Guidance and Career Education Part 3. This additional qualification course is primarily intended for any Elementary or Secondary teacher who is interested in learning more about the Guidance and Career Education Program within the whole school context.

What You’ll Learn

Overall, for Guidance and Career Education Part 3 Specialist, you will have the following expectations for learning:

-providing leadership in the implementation of Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum, policies, programs, guidelines and educational initiatives
-supporting others to apply the theoretical understanding necessary to implement and assess programs and/or practices at the local and district level
-modelling and providing leadership regarding expectations, strategies and assessment practices in response to the individual needs of students, and the promotion of student success
-providing instructional leadership in the creation of learning environments conducive to the diversity, character development, equity, multiple intelligence, social and emotional factors, and differentiated learning instruction
-providing leadership in the areas of diversity, equity and differentiated instruction
-providing leadership to foster collaboration with in-school personnel, parents/guardians and the community
-facilitating the use of a variety of appropriate resources, including technological and communication resources, to enhance professional knowledge in support of student learning
-supporting others to enhance professional practice through ongoing inquiry, dialogue and reflection
-providing leadership in support of ethical practices
-providing leadership in professional development through subject associations, professional learning communities and educational partners to enhance professional practice and support student learning
-modelling the integration of First Nations, Métis and Inuit (Aboriginal) ways of knowing and perspectives
-modeling environmentally respectful perspectives and practices
-providing leadership for sustaining safe, healthy, equitable and inclusive learning environments that honour and respect diversity
-providing leadership in ethical practices using the Ethical Guidelines for Ontario School Counsellors (Ontario School Counsellors’ Association)
-demonstrating leadership in the creation, delivery and implementation of Guidance programming and Guidance and Career Education courses
-modeling the role of the guidance teacher/counsellor in collaboration with all educational and community partners into regular practice
-providing leadership in the implementation of programs to address the continuum of Guidance and Career Education including K-12 and postsecondary.
