NOTE: This will require the candidate to have access to one brass and one woodwind instrument. The candidate may wish to consider contacting a Music store in order to rent these instruments.
The underlying purpose of the Additional Qualification course: Music – Instrumental, Part I, is to develop the skills and knowledge of the candidates in the design, delivery and assessment of instrumental music studies. The Additional Qualification course: Music – Instrumental, Part I supports the expectations outlined in the Ministry of Education curriculum policy documents and other Ministry of Education policies.
Topics include:
· demonstrating basic performance skills on two instruments: one brass, one woodwind
· demonstrating knowledge of other performance media: strings, guitar, piano, recorder, percussion, voice, Musical Instrumental Digital Interface (MIDI)
· experiencing music practices, including creating/improvising, world music, small ensembles, choir
· demonstrating an understanding of the use of technology in the instrumental classroom
· developing an understanding of the level of difficulty in repertoire as it relates to the student’s ability to meet or exceed expectations of performance
· demonstrating an ability to read and conduct from conductor’s scores of beginning level repertoire
· demonstrating an understanding of the importance of instrumental method books and repertoire selection· understanding the theoretical and practical relevance of proper teaching methods on the instruments
· demonstrating planning and teaching skills in non-performance activities
· using, accommodating, and modifying expectations, strategies and assessment practices based on the developmental or special needs of students
· understanding, devising and employing a variety of assessment and evaluation instruments appropriate to the developmental stage of students and the delivery of the music curriculum
· having an awareness of instrumental music and instruments from diverse cultures
· developing classroom management strategies for an active setting in which students work with instruments
· developing the ability to properly set up an instrumental music room/facility for effective instruction
· making connections with other areas in the curriculum
· communicating with parents/guardians about the value of instrumental music to the whole child
· investigating the community resources available to support instrumental music studies (e.g., guests, community musicians, institutions, churches)
Requirements:
- Hold a “Certificate of Qualification” or Interim “Certificate of Qualification”, showing basic qualifications in two divisions, i.e. Primary, Junior, Intermediate, or Senior. Candidates who hold an Interim COQ may have different/additional criteria for registration as required by the Ontario College of Teachers, and as specified on their Interim COQ.
- “Certificate of Qualification” must be in good standing.
Note: Candidates who hold Technological Education qualifications but do not have any basic qualifications in Primary, Junior, Intermediate or Senior divisions are only eligible to register in Part 1 as specified by the Ontario College of Teachers.
NOTE: There is a requirement to have or rent a brass instrument and a woodwind instrument.
