Course Description:
LOCATION: Faculty of Education gym.
The dates for the face-to-face sessions are : Mondays (5:00-9:00 p.m.) – TBA and Saturdays (8:00-4:30 p.m.) TBA This course provides candidates with a strong foundation and understanding of the vision and philosophy related to Honour Specialist, Health and Physical Education with particular focus on leadership in this subject area. Candidates will have opportunities to participate in practical and theoretical experiences. This course leads to possibilities in leadership as consultant or Head of Department.Topics in this course include:
- Ministry of Education K-12 curriculum guidelines
- OSBIE Safety Standards and practices
- Strategies to initiate and manage change related to Health and Physical Education
- Team building and decision-making skills necessary as a curriculum leader in Health and Physical Education
- Demonstrating leadership in the application of provincial regulations and policies, and local policies and procedures
- Demonstrating knowledge and skills required to manage an area of responsibility including staffing, budgets and the selection of texts, software and media
- Teaching and learning styles ; differentiating instruction for practical use in the classroom and gym
- Use of information and communication technologies as teaching and learning tools
- Formative and summative assessments in the classroom and gym
- Individual sports (track and field)
- Team sports (volleyball, soccer, basketball)
- Physical Education and students with special needs
- Daily Physical Activity
- Teaching games for understanding
- Health and the media
Requirements:
- a Certificate of Qualification
- A Bachelor’s degree from an Ontario university in a program that requires four years of university study, or the equivalent, to a total of at least 20 full year courses and in which the candidate has obtained at least second class or equivalent standing (B average – 70%) in at least NINE full year courses in the subject for which the candidate seeks qualification. (Note that course weights vary across institutions. Courses weighted as 3 credits are likely to be half courses.);
- Evidence of at least two years of successful teaching experience, of which at least one year (194 days) includes teaching in this subject area, as certified by the appropriate supervisory officer.
- The minimum passing grade for an Honour Specialist qualification is 70%
