Choices Into Action, Career Education, School-to-Work transitions and the multiplicity of challenges faced by today’s students make Guidance an essential part of school. As a teacher, you have an important role in guiding and counselling students. This course introduces you to the principles of counselling, the practice of guidance in the classroom and school setting, and theories of human development. You will acquire greater skill in helping students with self-management, planning, and problem solving, in addition to skills to improve your communication and relationship skills with students and parents. Legal and ethical issues that are relevant for guidance counselors will be examined including issues dealing with sexual misconduct and abuse.

Prerequisites

  • An undergraduate degree acceptable to the Ontario College of Teachers
  • Be a member in good standing with the OCT
